Celestial Bodies In Orbit

Celestial Bodies In Orbit

Eve Littlepage made her living as striptease dancer 'Lisa Doolittle' in the suburbs of Boston for ten years, from the mid-1970s through the mid-80s. Her memoir is about how she fell into this marginalized profession, some of the craziness that happened while she was in it, and how she struggled to find a way out and into a more wholesome life. Littlepage uses a unique vehicle for sharing her story: it is told interview-style to a fictional author named Stella Mars. This unusual method evokes a sense that one is eavesdropping on a very private conversation as Eve shares her secrets with Stella. The story weaves memories of her personal life together with reflections on her stripping career, and shows how the contrasting aspects of the two played off of each other as she evolved and grew through her varied experiences. Though metaphysics is not the main focus, Eve's story is laced with references to the I Ching, ghostly visitations, spiritual epiphanies, and other mystical themes. It may offer hope and inspiration to anyone who has ever felt stuck in a job or relationship that seemed impossible to escape. It is a tale of perseverance, resilience, and hope, sprinkled with humor and insight. One reader called it, ..". a coming-of-age story with more universal appeal than one might expect in a stripper's memoir." It's about choices and the ripple effect they create. It's Eve's 'secret past' - for your entertainment!

Astronomy

Astronomy

Astronomy is one of the oldest natural sciences. From ancient times, people have recorded methodical observations of objects in the night sky and attempted to understand the mysteries of the universe. This title provides an engaging and up-to-date presentation of fundamental astronomy facts and principles. The text clearly explains the nature of celestial bodies such as the planets, dwarf planets, stars, moons, asteroids, and comets. It also examines the tools and techniques used by today's astronomers, including high-tech telescopes, spectroscopy, and computer modeling. Enhanced with illuminating images, this title is an ideal introduction to astronomy for a range of readers.

Heaven And Earth In Ancient Greek Cosmology

Heaven And Earth In Ancient Greek Cosmology

In Miletus, about 550 B.C., together with our world-picture cosmology was born. This book tells the story. In Part One the reader is introduced in the archaic world-picture of a flat earth with the cupola of the celestial vault onto which the celestial bodies are attached. One of the subjects treated in that context is the riddle of the tilted celestial axis. This part also contains an extensive chapter on archaic astronomical instruments. Part Two shows how Anaximander (610-547 B.C.) blew up this archaic world-picture and replaced it by a new one that is essentially still ours. He taught that the celestial bodies orbit at different distances and that the earth floats unsupported in space. This makes him the founding father of cosmology. Part Three discusses topics that completed the new picture described by Anaximander. Special attention is paid to the confrontation between Anaxagoras and Aristotle on the question whether the earth is flat or spherical, and on the battle between Aristotle and Heraclides Ponticus on the question whether the universe is finite or infinite.

Methods Of Celestial Mechanics

Methods Of Celestial Mechanics

G. Beutler's Methods of Celestial Mechanics is a coherent textbook for students as well as an excellent reference for practitioners. The first volume gives a thorough treatment of celestial mechanics and presents all the necessary mathematical details that a professional would need. The reader will appreciate the well-written chapters on numerical solution techniques for ordinary differential equations, as well as that on orbit determination. In the second volume applications to the rotation of earth and moon, to artificial earth satellites and to the planetary system are presented. The author addresses all aspects that are of importance in high-tech applications, such as the detailed gravitational fields of all planets and the earth, the oblateness of the earth, the radiation pressure and the atmospheric drag. The concluding part of this monumental treatise explains and details state-of-the-art professional and thoroughly-tested software for celestial mechanics.
