This Fight Is Our Fight

This Fight Is Our Fight

#1 New York Times bestseller The fiery U.S. Senator from Massachusetts and bestselling author offers a passionate, inspiring book about why our middle class is under siege and how we can win the fight to save it Senator Elizabeth Warren has long been an outspoken champion of America’s middle class, and by the time the people of Massachusetts elected her in 2012, she had become one of the country’s leading progressive voices. Now, at a perilous moment for our nation, she has written a book that is at once an illuminating account of how we built the strongest middle class in history, a scathing indictment of those who have spent the past thirty-five years undermining working families, and a rousing call to action. Warren grew up in Oklahoma, and she’s never forgotten how difficult it was for her mother and father to hold on at the ragged edge of the middle class. An educational system that offered opportunities for all made it possible for her to achieve her dream of going to college, becoming a teacher, and, later, attending law school. But now, for many, these kinds of opportunities are gone, and a government that once looked out for working families is instead captive to the rich and powerful. Seventy-five years ago, President Franklin Roosevelt and his New Deal ushered in an age of widespread prosperity; in the 1980s, President Ronald Reagan reversed course and sold the country on the disastrous fiction called trickle-down economics. Now, with the election of Donald Trump--a con artist who promised to drain the swamp of special interests and then surrounded himself with billionaires and lobbyists--the middle class is being pushed ever closer to collapse. Written in the candid, high-spirited voice that is Warren’s trademark, This Fight Is Our Fight tells eye-opening stories about her battles in the Senate and vividly describes the experiences of hard-working Americans who have too often been given the short end of the stick. Elizabeth Warren has had enough of phony promises and a government that no longer serves its people--she won’t sit down, she won’t be silenced, and she will fight back.

Fighting The Dragon

Fighting The Dragon

For decades, traditional medicine had very little to offer for individuals suffering from multiple sclerosis and other autoimmune diseases. Today, medical science has brought us wave upon wave of immunomodulatory medications to try to slow disease progression. Unfortunately, these medications come with their own health- and life-threatening side effects. And sometimes, they just stop working. “Fighting the Dragon: How I Beat Multiple Sclerosis” is the story of one woman's thirty year battle with multiple sclerosis and what she did to reclaim her life when she realized she would need an assisted living facility within a few years. The book contains detailed descriptions of what worked and what did not, where she got the help she needed (and how the reader can locate these resources within his/her own community), and the logic behind the non-conventional therapies. “Fighting the Dragon” is a narrative of courage—courage driven by desperation, a story written by a patient who decided, when her neurologist told her, “You will never walk normally again,” that she would dance. "Fighting the Dragon" is also a book the MS patient can take to his/her physician . . . it contains well-researched, easy-to-follow guidelines for what to do and how. The information is also applicable to a wide range of other autoimmune conditions, cancers, and AIDS. * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * Excerpt: . . . if your car kept breaking down and the mechanic you took it to kept doing the same thing to fix it—but it did not stay fixed, you would question the mechanic's competence. Maybe the mechanic pulled out a technical manual. “See. I fixed it exactly as the manual said. This is the industry-approved way to solve this problem.” When the car broke down again a week later, would you be satisfied? Probably not. You might decide it is time to replace the car. But that might be too expensive. So, what to do? If you were smart, you would probably try to find a new mechanic. You might ask your friends who they would recommend. You might search on the Internet to see if other people had the same experience with their cars . . . and what caused the problem. You might telephone some repair shops to get some idea of what they thought the problem might be. If you found a new mechanic and that mechanic looked over the car and said, “I have a solution that is not in any industry-approved repair manuals, but it is safe and it works,”—would you walk away and go back to the first mechanic who never got it right? Why is your health worth any less than your car?

The Squad

The Squad

Tet, 1968. That was the Vietnam War's D Day, Battle of the Bulge, Iwo Jima, Crossing of the Rhine. In a series of battles in all parts of the country, condensed mostly in a three day span - although a few fights (Khe Sanh, Hue City) lasted longer - the Viet Cong were effectively destroyed as a fighting entity, and the North Vietnamese Army was severely damaged. Tet, 1968 was also when the United States lost the Vietnam War. In THE SQUAD one fourteen man US Marine Corps rifle squad led by Sergeant George Bingham is in a routine ambush outside a remote fire base in northern I Corps, close to the Demilitarized Zone between North and South Vietnam. This is the night before a scheduled cease fire for the Tet holiday; they don't expect any problems. When their fire base is unexpectedly hit by a superior force of North Vietnamese, the squad loses communication, and the Marines on the fire base are driven back. Unfortunately, the loss of communications means the squad doesn't get the word to pull out of their ambush and rejoin the rest of their company for the withdrawal. Their failure to rejoin their company leaves the other Marines thinking they were found and wiped out by the North Vietnamese. Morning finds the fourteen Marines not dead or even wounded, but alone deep behind North Vietnamese lines. Without knowing what's going on, or where friendly units are, Sergeant Bingham and his Marines must find a way to evade contact with the thousands of enemy soldiers, and reconnect with other Marines. Complicating matters, they started out with only enough supplies on the ambush to last overnight. Who are these Marines? How do they relate to each other? In order to tell their story properly, LtCol R. W. Thoreau, the fictional narrator whose After Action Reports and historical analysis are spread throughout the novel, begins the story on March 9, 1965, the day Bingham learns of the Marine landing at Da Nang, which was the beginning of the American ground war in Vietnam. Bingham drops out of college at the end of the term and enlists in the Marines. The members of this squad, as is the case in all squads, have strong friendships - as well as conflicts among the Marines.

Warrior Mums

Warrior Mums

One of the benefits of social media is getting to meet the parents of special needs children and adults. I have grown to know and truly admire these brave people. Our solitary journeys have taken many different roads, yet we've all connected on sites like Facebook, Twitter, and other forums. The support we give each other is a lifeline-an opportunity to not only share the joys our sons and daughters bring into our lives, but also the chance to rant about the frequent injustices we meet head on. I am honoured to have 'met' so many fantastic Warrior Mums from around the world, so honoured that I decided to feature some of their stories in a blog series, which I have now reproduced in this book. These mums will inspire you, just like they have me, these brave women who share their stories from childhood to motherhood and reveal far more than they normally would, in the hope their stories will help others.
