An evocative, immersive memoir that charts the personal evolution of an American philanthropic thought leader and arts advocate. A Life of My Own follows the author’s journey from girlhood to the woman she would become. Wilhelm reveals her unique upbringing, diverse work history, family challenges and journey of personal growth with unbridled honesty and narrative energy. When life on the outside seemed under control, her inner life was in turmoil. A search for self-realization explores lies and deception about her origins, and a quest for truth and understanding that ultimately shapes a woman with profound purpose and mission. Donna Wilhelm’s memoir will inspire future generations to take ownership of their own life choices and stories as they travel with her on a journey as universal as it is empowering.

As part of the incomparable Hazelden Meditations series, the daily readings in A Life of My Own ask us to truly reflect on our relationships with people in our lives who are dealing with alcoholism or other substance use and addiction—and more importantly, to establish and improve a relationship with ourselves. When we love people who use or abuse alcohol and other drugs, we can get so wrapped up in trying to understand and “fix” the addiction problem. It is easy to lose sight of ourselves and stop living our own lives. Designed for personal growth, this collection of readings by beloved recovery author Karen Casey inspires readers to invest in themselves again by addressing the feelings of desperation and frustration at the core of codependency. With the wisdom of Twelve Step principles, relatable anecdotes, and helpful recovery insights, readers can build a daily practice of reflection, inspiration, healing, and meditation. The simple, straightforward quotations and affirmations in A Life of My Own offer the strength and courage we all need for true freedom. Encouraging you to connect with your spiritual and emotional health—as well as build self-esteem, serenity, and acceptance—Casey reflects on the type of healing that helps us return to living.

My book is about my life from childhood to now. It looks at the difficulties and traumatic experiences i went through in my childhood - sexual and physical abuse, and not being protected by those who were supposed to look after me and love me. I try to give comfort to those who may have been in a similar situation to mine.I'm writing this book, telling the whole world of my suffering and pain i experienced as a child - sexual abuse, physical abuse, pain that i have locked up inside for years. Revisiting my past whilst writing this book has been extremely painful and has filled me with tears in some chapters. It has always been my desire to tell my story so that people know that despite all the pain i experienced and although i may still be damaged psychologically, i managed to overcome this and have a balanced life. As a child, i had no one to tell about my suffering. I was that child that no one wanted to know or to speak to.There may be people out there who are suffering in silence like i did and may be scared to talk to someone. I hope that this book will inspire and counsel them and encourage them to do something about it. I hope that my book will help those affected to move on with their lives like i did.
