Career Opportunities in Healthcare Management is a concise, reader-friendly, introductory healthcare management book that covers a wide variety of career opportunities in a broad range of direct healthcare settings--such as hospitals, physician practices, nursing homes, and clinics--and non-direct health care settings, such as associations, managed care and health insurance companies, consulting firms, and medical supplier firms. Filled with first person accounts from health care managers working in the field, these profiles will engage the reader’s imagination, inform them of key issues associated with these important roles, as well as what makes these health care managers happy and eager to go to work in the morning. Beginning with an individualized 'Health Care Management Talent Quotient Quiz' and ending with a guide to finding a job in healthcare management, this hands on student-friendly and teacher-friendly text is the perfect resource for students of healthcare management, nursing, allied health, business administration, pharmacy, occupational therapy, public administration, and public health. Features: • The experienced authors use an active voice to grab the reader’s attention. • An individualized Health Care Management Talent Quotient Quiz to assess each student’s baseline aptitude and identify skills gaps that need to be addressed. • Over forty lively, first person profiles of health care managers working in the field covering everything from educational background and how they first became aware of health care management, through advice to future health care managers. • Detailed appendices that include: resources for learning more about health care management; sample programs of study; job hunting advice; frequently used terms in advertisements, sample position descriptions, do’s and don’ts of interviewing, and a sample cover letter and resume.

Not so long ago, The Economist described Africa as a hopeless continent. This damning description specifically referred to the development status of Africa. While the debate on the political and socio-economic [under-]development of Africa had been raging on prior to the Economist’s daring but controversial pronouncements, it intensified from thereon. Many concerned people from within the continent and elsewhere have reproved the proclamation but mainly in newspapers and the broadcast media. Not enough has been done by development scholars to critically reflect on the description and status of Africa’s development condition in a nuanced and systematic fashion. Yet, it is through incisive reflections and systematic engagements with Africa’s situations and circumstances that directions and solutions to the African development predicament could be forged. The present volume is an attempt to open up a constructive dialogue between the Global North and the Global South on the African [under-]development conundrum. The book is an eye opener to African governments, social scientists, policy makers and development scholars concerned with the urgent need to rethink, reimagine and retheorise Africa’s development gridlock.

Using constructivist principles and autonomous learning techniques the ELP has pioneered innovative and cutting edge approaches to learning languages that can be applied to learning across the spectrum. Although articles on the success of the ELP project have appeared in some academic journals, Perspectives from the European Language Portfolio is the first book to report on and contextualise the project’s innovative techniques for a wider educational research audience. During the last ten years the ELP has increasingly become a reference tool for language learning and teaching in primary, secondary and tertiary educational settings all around Europe. The editors of this volume believe that there is a need to reflect on the significant contribution that the ELP has delivered for language learning and teaching, and to critically evaluate its achievements. This volume offers a range of investigations from theoretical studies to practical cases around these issues, and includes: relevant contributions of the ELP to language pedagogy; assessing the impact of the ELP on pedagogical research and practice; exploring and defining pathways for future developments; Reflective learning. This book is intended for a readership of language teachers and researchers across Europe. It will be of particular relevance to those engaged in language learning and teaching within the Common European Framework of Reference, supporting independent learning and developing a language curriculum, whether in school, adult, further or higher education.

This book presents a unique array of insights into Hong Kong's transition to China since the 1 July 1997 handover, from several perspectives around the region. Scholars from China, Taiwan, Singapore, Indonesia, Malaysia, Thailand and New Zealand undertake an analysis and synthesis of particular regional viewpoints on the transfer of sovereignty. Each contribution is positioned in relation to the three interconnected themes of economic transformation, political and legal developments, and identity which run through the volume. The sometimes contradictory and provocative insights highlighted by the authors emphasize the inherent complexities of Hong Kong's transition and the range of alternative regional perspectives it engenders. Michael Udoekpo's work brilliantly and pastorally discusses the issues of conflict, friction, and disunity in the world--and in Nigeria in particular--from biblical, historical, and sociocultural perspectives. These issues, he stresses, are endemic in various fabrics of the Nigerian society, traceable to the family as the foundation of any given society. They are also found in religious, political, and media groups. Contributing factors, Udoekpo argues, are materialism, infidelity, relativism, and fundamentalism. Others are ethnocentrism, anthropocentricism, ignorance, bribery, and corruption with other forms of injustices. Drawing from the Bible, Udoekpo proposes prayer, proper education, truth-telling, restoration of family values, interreligious and cultural dialogue, ecumenism, enforcement of rule of law, faith, and absolute trust in God as antidotes to conflict, violence, friction, and disunity in our contemporary society.
